One of the most popular pet lizards sold, the Leopard Gecko stays at a smaller size than other lizards, and has a really calm disposition. The Leopard Gecko comes in many different colors, and even comes in a giant morph. With just a little bit of work, they can become very rewarding pets.
Housing: Leopard Geckos should be kept in a 10 gallon aquarium as hatchlings, and the maximum cage size for an adult Gecko should not exceed a 20 gallon aquarium. Simple substrates such as Zoomeds Cage Carpet, or Zoomeds Reptisand make simple yet pleasing substrates for you and your animal. Leopard Geckos are nocturnal and love to hide, so make sure to have plenty of rocks, branches and caves to keep the Gecko happy.
**As the cage size increases, you can add all different kinds of décor to the cage, some low lying live plants do well in a Leopard Gecko cage.
Lighting and Heating: Leopard Geckos spend a lot of time in hides, so it is not required to have a light, although some people use a light which works well. If using a light, use a black or red bulb around 75 watts. The most efficient way to keep a Leopard Gecko warm is through the use of an under tank heater. The heater should provide heat at one hide to keep it around 90 degrees. Either method of heating works.
**UVB is no necessary for a Leopard Gecko because they are nocturnal
Feeding: Leopard Geckos are easy to feed, their diet consists solely of insects. The easiest feeders to use for Leopard Geckos are mealworms, crickets, and dubia roaches. The general rule for feeding a Leopard Gecko is two insects per inch of Gecko. Feed the Leopard Gecko once every other day.
Make sure to keep a water bowl with a fresh supply of water in the Geckos cage at all times.
Health Issues: Leopard Geckos are very hardy creatures and rarely have health issues. The only issue to worry about is internal impaction. Geckos may ingest some substrate every now and then, but if it builds up, it may get stuck during digestion, blocking the regular bowel movements of the animal. Keep your Gecko well fed, and this is problem that will never happen.
